Governor: Hawaii Reports No Big Tsunami Waves Yet

(MENAFN) Despite initial fears sparked by an enormous 8.8 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, Hawaii has so far avoided significant tsunami damage, according to the state’s governor.

“So far we have not seen a wave of consequence,” Josh Green stated during a press briefing on Wednesday. While no large waves have reached Hawaiian shores, officials did observe a notable withdrawal of ocean water—a potential warning sign often associated with tsunami activity.

Authorities are continuing to monitor coastal conditions closely. Green noted that it will likely take another two to three hours before officials can confidently declare an “all clear.”

The earthquake, one of the strongest recorded in recent history, prompted immediate alerts from the US Tsunami Warning System, which cautioned of potential tsunami waves impacting coastal regions of Russia, Japan, Alaska, and Hawaii. Emergency management teams in all affected areas remain on high alert, ready to respond to any sudden developments.
