City provides $200,000 to the Hawai'i foodbank to support tropical storm lala recovery

HONOLULU – The City and County of Honolulu is partnering with Hawaiʻi Foodbank and community organizations to provide additional food assistance to individuals and families impacted by Tropical Storm Lala.

To support the ongoing recovery effort, the City is providing $200,000 to Hawaiʻi Foodbank to help source and transport food for distribution to communities across Oʻahu.

“Tropical Storm Lala has had a real impact on families across Oʻahu, and for some, that includes something as basic and essential as having enough food on the table,” said Mayor Rick Blangiardi. “This $200,000 investment will help Hawaiʻi Foodbank and its community partners get food where it is needed most. Recovery takes all of us working together, and I am incredibly grateful to the organizations, volunteers and community members who continue to step up and take care of one another.”

Hawaiʻi Foodbank’s current supplemental food distribution schedule includes:

• Friday, Aug. 21, 9 a.m. to noon: ʻElepaio Social Services at Nānākuli High and Intermediate School

• Friday, Aug. 21, 4 to 6 p.m.: KEY Project, 47-200 Waiheʻe Road, Kāneʻohe

• Monday, Aug. 24, 2:30 p.m.: Hope Chapel Kahuku at Kahuku Medical Center

• Tuesday, Aug. 25, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.: ʻElepaio Social Services at Waiʻanae Boat Harbor

ʻElepaio Social Services also plans to distribute hot meals beginning at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at Nānākuli High and Intermediate School. Meals will be provided by Lanakila Pacific, The Salvation Army, KUPU and Jeremiah’s Island Fusion, in partnership with Chef Hui.

No advance registration is required for distributions through KEY Project and Hope Chapel Kahuku. Food will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration is typically required for ʻElepaio Social Services distributions and is available through the organization’s website.

Residents are encouraged to confirm the latest distribution information with the participating organization before traveling to a site, as schedules and availability may change.
