Turning Virtual Wrenches: Alamo Wing Reimagines Maintenance Training

Inside a quiet, air-conditioned room, Senior Airman Emerson Plewacki slides a black virtual reality headset over his eyes. Instantly, the quiet room vanishes, replaced by the towering, grey fuselage of a C-5M Super Galaxy.

For Plewacki, a 433rd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron aero repair journeyman, this digital flight line is a playground of possibilities. In this virtual world, there is no scorching South Texas heat, no deafening roar of departing aircraft, and critically, no risk of making a million-dollar mistake.

"Going to tech school, you have big classes, so getting everyone reps is very difficult," said Plewacki, who recently transitioned to the Air Force Reserve from active duty. "When you do the VR program, the smaller eight- to 10-person classes really help by letting you get a lot of reps and individual training. You do it as many times as you need to feel comfortable, and then when we get out to the aircraft, it goes a lot smoother."

Plewacki is among the third class of maintainers benefiting from the 433rd Maintenance Group’s virtual reality driven Maintenance Qualification Training Program, an initiative preparing Airmen for high-tempo missions today while transforming training methods for the future. The latest course got underway in mid-August.

"We currently live in a resource-constrained environment," said Col. Michael Egbalic, 433rd MXG commander. "Whether it’s people, planes, parts, or money, anywhere we can save certainly helps us move the football forward, one yard at a time."

The Alamo Wing operates in a uniquely demanding environment, supporting dual-flying operations for both its operational airlift squadron and the formal training unit responsible for training all C-5 crews in the Air Force. This high-tempo schedule places natural constraints on aircraft availability for ground training.

"We’ve got to think of ways to overcome this," Egbalic said. “The VR program allows us to operate virtually without the use of an aircraft. It saves us money, saves us time, and gets qualified maintainers back to the flight line faster to keep our jets flying."

The financial returns are already compounding. Tech. Sgt. Martin Calles, a 433rd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron crew chief and one of the lead instructors in the VR program, tracked the metrics from a recent class of nine students. In just 72 academic days, practicing tasks in the virtual world instead of a running aircraft saved more than $152,000 in fuel and equipment costs.

"If you multiply that across a full year, we’re looking at well over $500,000 in savings," Calles said. "And that doesn’t even account for the wear and tear we’ve prevented on the aircraft or the components we didn't damage through student error."

The program’s dynamic learning pace also allowed the most recent class to graduate two weeks ahead of schedule, returning capable, flight-line-ready maintainers back to their units early to support operations.

Beyond cost savings, 433rd MXG leaders say the program is actively helping to curate a more adaptable Reserve force of the future. In 2027, the Air Force plans to consolidate several maintenance career fields, requiring Airmen to qualify on a broader range of skills.

"With an AFSC merger, you're going to have expanded training requirements," said Chief Master Sgt. Byron Frost, 433rd MXG senior enlisted leader. "The VR program is a huge leap in capability because it allows people to train on their own, get the general lay of the land, and build muscle memory before they do the actual evaluation. It’s like finding a way to get players more practice before a football game without risking them getting hurt."

The technology is also proving highly effective for developing Airmen transitioning to the C-5 from other airframes. Recently, five Alamo Wing Air Reserve Technicians who came from working on fighters used the VR program to study the Super Galaxy’s massive and complex digitized systems, accelerating their qualification training by weeks.

Non-maintenance personnel are also using the system. Under the "multi-capable Airman" concept, Airmen with medical and planning specialties learned basic safety and ground operations, while newly commissioned officers with limited mechanical background used VR to better understand flight line dynamics and lead more effectively.

"This younger generation of Airmen is highly technological," Egbalic said. "They learn from video games, YouTube, and electronic media. This bridges that learning curve in a tactile way."

Egbalic also emphasized how the program helps preserve and protect Reservists’ ability to serve by streamlining training. He noted focused VR training respects their time by reducing administrative flight line delays so they can learn more efficiently during tight training windows.

The success has caught the attention of the wider C-5M Super Galaxy community. Recently, active-duty maintainers from the 515th Air Mobility Operations Wing based out of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii traveled to San Antonio to train with the Alamo Wing. They leveraged the VR setup to get required training reps they cannot easily get at their home station. Other Air Force Reserve Command C-5 wings have also expressed interest in sending their Airmen to the program.

"We want to be the central hub outside of technical training for C-5M Super Galaxy maintenance," Calles said. "We can help create versatile, capable Airmen at a much faster rate."

Despite the program's massive success, it faces a primary hurdle: manpower. Currently, the instructors managing and running the VR lab are pulled "out of hide," meaning they split their time with primary flight line duties.

"Having authorized, dedicated instructors for this system would be a massive force multiplier," Frost said. "It would allow us to keep software and modules updated, expand our class sizes, and offer this world-class training to the rest of the AFRC enterprise."

Leaders overseeing the program have been clear about one key factor: virtual reality is not a replacement for turning wrenches on a real aircraft. However, it is an accelerant to higher quality, more efficient training on live aircraft.

"The virtual world cuts out the noise, the paperwork, and the prep time so we can focus strictly on the task at hand," Calles said. "It gets our Airmen to a higher level of proficiency before they ever step onto the flight line. In today's Air Force, that's how we stay ready."
