Hawaii Soldier sentenced to prison in dark-web CSAM case
WHEELER ARMY AIRFIELD, Hawaii – A military judge convicted a Soldier of possessing and viewing child sexual abuse material during his trial Oct. 13-15 at the Wheeler Army Airfield courtroom.
Spc. Victor O. Nunez, 26, an Army culinary specialist assigned to the 225th Light Support Battalion, 25th Division Sustainment Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison, total forfeiture of pay and allowances, reduction in rank to E-1, and a dishonorable discharge from the Army.
In May 2025, the Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division received a CyberTip from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. The financial services firm Robinhood reported that Nunez used his account to purchase child sexual abuse material with cryptocurrency between December 2024 and March 2025.
NCMEC subsequently forwarded eight additional CyberTips associated with Nunez’s purchases of CSAM.
Army CID agents executed a search warrant and seized Nunez’s electronic devices. A forensic examination revealed that his laptop contained numerous CSAM videos of children who appeared to be toddlers and elementary-aged girls.
Further analysis showed that Nunez used the Tor Browser to access dark-web sites to download and purchase explicit videos. He bookmarked multiple dark-web sites advertising CSAM and had organized the downloaded files for repeated viewing.
“Every piece of child sexual abuse material represents the exploitation of a real child whose trauma was documented and preserved,” said Capt. Matthew McCoy, prosecutor, Seventh Circuit, Army Office of Special Trial Counsel. “Spc. Nunez went to great lengths to seek out, purchase, download, and repeatedly view these horrific images. Anyone who deliberately fuels this market must know that the Army will hold them fully accountable.”
“Thanks to the CyberTip from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, our team followed the digital footprint of these transactions to successfully intercept Nunez’s activity, seize the evidence, and remove a predator from our ranks,” said Special Agent in Charge Michael DeFamio, Army CID’s Asia Pacific Field Office. “Army CID’s cyber agents and forensic analysts will continue to leverage every technological and investigative asset available to protect the most vulnerable among us.”
“Spc. Nunez actively sought out CSAM on the dark web, downloaded videos, and attempted to purchase more. He did all of this while continuing to go to work and keep up the appearance of being a good Soldier. His ability to hide his depravity in plain sight is what makes him dangerous and the very reason society needs to be protected from him,” said Hawaii Field Officer in Charge Maj. Lynn Arashiro, Seventh Circuit, Army OSTC.
Nunez is currently confined at the Naval Consolidated Brig Pearl Harbor awaiting orders to transfer to another military corrections facility. Upon release from prison, he will be required to register as a sex offender under federal and state statutory requirements.
This case was investigated by Army CID’s Asia Pacific Field Office, and prosecuted by McCoy, Arashiro and Capt. Matthew Gruszka, Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, 25th Infantry Division.
